CANZUK International has made a progress in their campaign allowing medical professionals, from Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom to explore job opportunities, in Nova Scotia, Canada. This decision was influenced by the efforts of CANZUK International during the summer of 2023.
Provinces Respond to CANZUK International’s Request
In June 2023 CANZUK International reached out to health authorities, in provinces and territories urging them to reconsider regulations in order to make it easier for doctors from CANZUK countries to practice. Nova Scotia took the lead by simplifying the licensing process for these professionals. Previously they had to go through evaluation, by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and take an exam. However now they are no longer required to do so if they already possess licenses from their home countries.
Public Safety and Welcome Approach
According to Dr. Gus Grant, Registrar and CEO of the Nova Scotia College, the primary objective is public safety coupled with a welcoming approach towards competent physicians. The decision comes at a crucial time when nearly 145,000 people are waiting for a family doctor in Nova Scotia.
Ongoing Efforts by CANZUK International
CANZUK International welcomes this announcement and intends to continue working with health authorities across Canada. Their ultimate aim is to ensure that medical professionals from Australia, New Zealand, and the UK receive priority for working visas and licenses.
Local Recruitment Initiatives
Concurrently with this policy change, northern Nova Scotia’s Truro and Colchester communities initiated their own recruitment processes targeting physicians from the UK. David Phillips, CEO of the Truro and Colchester Partnership for Economic Prosperity, stated that any policy changes simplifying the recruitment of qualified doctors are much appreciated. Out of the 199 physicians who initially expressed interest in relocating to the area, 18 qualified family doctors and specialists have shown a genuine interest in settling there.
