Immigration as a Key Election Issue

As the 2024 U.S. elections loom, immigration and border enforcement are top concerns for both Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. The issue of immigration has gained significant traction, partly due to the substantial financial commitment to border security. According to a report from The Texas Tribune, a staggering $11 billion has been allocated to ‘Operation Lone Star’ since 2021.

Evolving Border Conditions

Recent measures have effectively reduced illegal immigration into the United States, following a peak surge of immigrants at the Texas border since 2021. Current stability might be jeopardized by potential geopolitical shifts south of the border, signalling that immigration control remains a critical issue.

Public Opinion on Immigration

American voters increasingly believe that immigration levels should decrease. The concept of an ‘open border’ with Mexico fuels significant debate between Democrats and Republicans. In June, President Biden’s new asylum restrictions led to a drop in immigration numbers, addressing long-term immigration concerns.

Differing Approaches: Trump vs. Harris

Donald Trump had previously advocated for an increase in immigration to attract talented individuals for nation-building, which received mixed reactions. He emphasized the need for thorough screening by federal agencies before allowing immigrants into the country if he returns to office.

Kamala Harris faces scrutiny over her use of profanity in public statements, reflecting broader trends in American political discourse. According to Quorum research, U.S. congressional politicians used expletives 205 times on X last year, contrasting sharply with zero instances in 2015. The rise in political profanity is partly attributed to social media and partisan divides.

Experts suggest that American politicians should draw inspiration from more reserved public discourse practices, ultimately fostering a more civil political environment.

As immigration continues to be a pivotal issue in the 2024 elections, both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump will need to navigate voter concerns and differing policy approaches while addressing broader shifts in political decorum.
