Streamlining Transit Visa Applications for New Zealand: New Online System and Changes for Fijian Nationals

As of August 12, 2024, travellers needing a Transit Visa for New Zealand can now apply online through the Enhanced Immigration Online system. This development marks a significant improvement over the previous paper application process, making it more streamlined and efficient. The new online system eliminates the need to visit Visa Application Centres, which also removes the associated fees. Applicants will find the process easier and gain the ability to track their application status in real time.

Chinese Group Transit Visa Applications

However, it’s important to note that applicants seeking Group Transit Visas for Chinese Nationals will still need to use the paper application process for now. Efforts are underway to develop an online solution for this particular category soon.

Changes to Transit Requirements for Fijian Nationals

Starting September 4, 2024, Fiji will join the Transit Visa waiver list. This change allows Fijian nationals to apply for a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) instead of a Transit Visa, significantly simplifying their application process. Beginning on this date, Fijian citizens can apply for an NZeTA to transit through New Zealand. Existing approved Transit Visas will remain valid until their expiry date, even after the waiver takes effect.

The fee for an NZeTA is NZD$23.00 when applied online or NZD$17.00 if using the free app. Most requests are processed within 72 hours and are valid for two years.

Fijian nationals who plan to visit, study, or work in New Zealand will still need to apply for the appropriate visa before travelling. Additionally, those travelling from or to Fiji via Wellington or Christchurch on Fiji Airways will still require a Visitor Visa due to the lack of transit facilities at these airports.

Expansion of New Zealand’s Transit Visa Waiver List

New Zealand’s decision to add Fiji to its Transit Visa Waiver List effectively eases travel procedures for Fijian nationals. From September 4, 2024, Fijians transiting through Auckland International Airport can opt for an NZeTA instead of a transit visa.
