India-Canada Diplomatic Tensions Escalate with Expulsion of Diplomats

India’s Decision to Expel Canadian Diplomats

In a significant diplomatic move, India has ordered the expulsion of six Canadian diplomats, including the Acting Canadian High Commissioner, from its territory by October 19. This decision comes amid rising tensions following the alleged killing of Khalistan terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada and subsequent accusations from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau against India. The Indian Government has emphasized that these unfounded allegations have compromised the safety of Indian diplomats in Canada.

Reacting to Allegations and Ensuring Diplomatic Safety

The Ministry of External Affairs in India summoned the Acting Canadian High Commissioner on Monday evening, firmly dismissing the accusations made against Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma. The ministry accused Canada of fostering an atmosphere of extremism and violence with unsubstantiated claims, jeopardizing the safety of its diplomats. As a countermeasure to perceived threats, India has opted to recall Verma and other officials while expelling their Canadian counterparts.

Accusations from the Trudeau Government

The deteriorating relations stem from Canada’s allegations that Sanjay Kumar Verma personally involved himself in the investigation into Nijjar’s murder. Trudeau’s administration accused India of being linked to Nijjar’s death, which prompted India to issue a stern diplomatic rebuttal and take withdrawal actions.

India Refutes Baseless Allegations by Canada

In a firm rebuttal, India has rejected Canada’s unfounded allegations, emphasizing their unwillingness to entertain such claims. The Ministry of External Affairs officially asserted that the accusations linking the Indian High Commissioner to a murder investigation are entirely unjustified. India’s response highlighted that the Canadian government is tarnishing the reputation of Indian officials without substantiating evidence. Furthermore, India criticized Canada’s lack of action against Khalistan extremists operating within its borders, suggesting this as a potential motive for their baseless assertions.
